iPhone: 1320 x 2868 px (6.9-inch) or 1206 x 2622 px (6.3-inch). iPad: 2064 x 2752 px (13-inch). 1 to 10 screenshots, JPEG or PNG, no transparency.
The size of an App Store screenshot depends on the target display, and Apple accepts several formats per display. For iPhone, the largest size is 1320 x 2868 pixels in portrait, the size of the latest iPhone Pro Max (the former 6.9-inch format). The size Apple now marks as required is the one for the iPhone with Dynamic Island and a medium display, the former 6.3-inch: 1206 x 2622 or 1179 x 2556 pixels. For iPad, it's 2064 x 2752 or 2048 x 2732 pixels (13-inch), and only if your app runs on iPad.
You upload 1 to 10 screenshots per display size, in .jpeg, .jpg or .png, with no transparency. For landscape, just swap the two values. Every dimension in this guide is copied from the official screenshot specifications page in App Store Connect, checked on October 15, 2026.
I publish my own iOS apps, including Solys, an alarm clock with mini-games, and TradaZen, a trading simulator. Their screenshots exist in 38 languages. My method is detailed further down.
App Store screenshot sizes for iPhone: the full table
For recent iPhones, Apple no longer talks in inches. Until late 2025, its page still had headings like "6.9" Display". It now sorts iPhones into groups, such as "iPhone with Dynamic Island (large display)". I'm keeping both names.
| Display (old name) | Apple group | Portrait (pixels) |
|---|---|---|
| 6.9-inch | Dynamic Island, large | 1320 x 2868 |
| 6.9-inch | Dynamic Island, large | 1290 x 2796 |
| 6.9-inch | Dynamic Island, large | 1260 x 2736 |
| 6.5-inch | Face ID, large | 1284 x 2778 |
| 6.5-inch | Face ID, large | 1242 x 2688 |
| 6.3-inch | Dynamic Island, medium | 1206 x 2622 |
| 6.3-inch | Dynamic Island, medium | 1179 x 2556 |
| 6.1-inch | Face ID, medium | 1170 x 2532 |
| 6.1-inch | Face ID, medium | 1125 x 2436 |
| 6.1-inch | Face ID, medium | 1080 x 2340 |
| 5.5-inch | Home button, large | 1242 x 2208 |
| 4.7-inch | Home button, medium | 750 x 1334 |
The most common groups, according to Apple's list:
- Dynamic Island, large display: iPhone 18 Pro Max, 17 Pro Max, 16 Pro Max, 16 Plus, 15 Pro Max, 15 Plus, 14 Pro Max and iPhone Air.
- Dynamic Island, medium display: iPhone 18 Pro, 17 Pro, 17, 16 Pro, 16, 15 Pro, 15 and 14 Pro.
- Home button, medium display: iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), 8, 7, 6s and 6.
The very old 4-inch and 3.5-inch formats are still listed: Apple fills them by scaling down a larger format.
The new iPhone Duo
In September 2026, Apple added the iPhone Duo, which has two displays: 1398 x 2034 pixels for the outer display and 2007 x 2853 pixels for the inner display, in portrait. These screenshots will become required starting April 2027 for any app built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later. The App Store Connect release notes from October 5, 2026 announce that submissions of apps optimized for iPhone Duo are open.
Screenshot sizes for iPad
| Display | Portrait (pixels) | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| 13-inch | 2064 x 2752 | Required if iPad |
| 13-inch | 2048 x 2732 | Required if iPad |
| 12.9-inch | 2048 x 2732 | Optional |
| 11-inch | 1668 x 2420 | Optional |
| 11-inch | 1668 x 2388 | Optional |
| 11-inch | 1640 x 2360 | Optional |
| 11-inch | 1488 x 2266 | Optional |
| 10.5-inch | 1668 x 2224 | Optional |
| 9.7-inch | 1536 x 2048 | Optional |
Any optional size you don't provide is filled by scaling down a larger size. The 13-inch group covers iPad Pro (M5, M4, and 1st through 6th generation, except the 2nd) and iPad Air (M4, M3, M2).
If your app doesn't run on iPad, you don't have to provide any iPad screenshots. With Expo, the ios.supportsTablet option decides this, and it defaults to false. An app opened up to iPad by mistake forces you to produce one more set.
Which sizes you need at minimum
Here's what Apple says, as of October 15, 2026:
- iPhone: at least one screenshot for the iPhone with Dynamic Island and a medium display, the former 6.3-inch.
- iPad, if your app supports iPadOS: at least one 13-inch screenshot.
- Scaling: if your UI is the same across all formats and all languages, you can provide only the highest required resolution. App Store Connect scales it down for smaller displays.
Heads up, this rule has changed. The September 11, 2024 release note asked for a single iPhone screenshot, in 6.5-inch or 6.9-inch. And further down that same page, the Face ID large display group (6.5-inch) is still "required" if the app runs on iPhone and no Dynamic Island large display screenshot is provided.
When in doubt, here's what I recommend:
| Your app | iPhone | iPad |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone only | 1320 x 2868 + 1206 x 2622 | Nothing |
| iPhone and iPad | 1320 x 2868 + 1206 x 2622 | 2064 x 2752 |
On my apps, I upload a single 1320 x 2868 set per language, and App Store Connect accepted the submission for review in October 2026. Adding the 1206 x 2622 set follows the page to the letter.
Format, number and order of screenshots
The file rules are simple:
- 1 to 10 screenshots per display size.
- Accepted formats: .jpeg, .jpg and .png.
- No alpha channel or transparency. A PNG exported with a transparent background gets rejected: flatten the image onto a solid background.
Order matters more than count. Apple says on its product page guide that, depending on orientation, the first one to three screenshots appear in search results when there's no app preview. They're what decides whether someone opens your listing.
For languages, the localization help page states that when you add a language, its screenshots default to those of your primary language. So translating your screenshots isn't required, but a translated listing with screenshots left in English is less convincing. How to pick the words for each listing is explained in App Store keywords.
App previews: length, dimensions and formats
App previews are optional. According to the app preview specifications:
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Count | 0 to 3 per size and language |
| Length | 15 to 30 seconds |
| Max file size | 500 MB |
| Formats | .mov, .m4v, .mp4 (H.264) |
| iPhone with Face ID | 886 x 1920 in portrait |
| 5.5-inch iPhone | 1080 x 1920 in portrait |
| 13- and 11-inch iPad | 1200 x 1600 in portrait |
ProRes 422 (HQ only) is also accepted in .mov. Good to know:
- Previews always come before screenshots, even if you change the order.
- A preview whose format differs from your screenshots is placed in a separate section, "A Closer Look".
- They autoplay muted: the first few seconds have to make sense without audio.
- Processing takes up to 24 hours, and the default poster frame is taken at 5 seconds.
What screenshots are allowed to show
The content is reviewed by App Review. The App Review Guidelines set four useful rules:
- 2.3.3: show the app in use, not just a title screen, a login page or a splash screen. Text and images added on top are allowed.
- 2.3.4: an app preview only contains screen recordings of the app, with voiceover and text if you want.
- 2.3.8: visuals suitable for a 4+ audience, even if your app is rated higher.
- 2.3.10: no images of another mobile platform. An Android phone frame on a screenshot is exactly what this rule forbids.
Rule 2.3 also requires screenshots that reflect the core experience and stay up to date with each version. If you sell a subscription, 2.3.2 requires you to indicate what needs a purchase. Other metadata rejections are covered in why Apple rejects an app. A rejection that only concerns screenshots can be fixed without rebuilding, as explained in App Store review time.
My method for screenshots in 38 languages
Here's the method I use for the Solys and TradaZen screenshots.
- I capture the real app, in each language, on the current build. The iOS simulator is launched in the target language, a deep link opens the screen to show, the status bar time is fixed and the demo data is clean.
- I compose the screenshots in code. A single template, with each language's headlines in one file. Each script has its own font (Thai, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Korean) and a text engine that handles complex scripts. Without it, Thai tones and vowels shift out of place.
- The first screenshot uses the listing's main search query in its language. The next ones each carry one benefit, in short headlines: around twenty characters in Latin script, around ten in Chinese or Japanese.
- I export a single size, 1320 x 2868, as PNG with no transparency, and I upload everything through the App Store Connect API instead of dragging 38 folders by hand. Each file is checked by its hash and its position.
- I compare the same area across all languages, side by side. That's a lesson I paid for: screenshots rebuilt from old images once kept an outdated screen in eight languages. The file count and their status were fine. Only the visual contact sheet revealed it.
After changing your screenshots, track the effect on your visibility for a few weeks: the method is in tracking your app's ranking. And if your first screenshot doesn't show what sets your app apart, reread guideline 4.3 on design spam: the reviewer judges the listing too.
If you want screenshots ready to upload
The App Store Screenshots Kit bundles the 4 screenshot styles from my published apps and the skill Claude Code uses to compose yours from your app's screens: 6.9-inch and 6.3-inch iPhone, iPad, and headlines translated into your listing's languages, no design software needed.
Getting ready for your first submission? The free diagnostic sends you my Apple anti-rejection checklist and tells you what's left to do. For the rest of the listing (title, subtitle and keywords), the App Store ASO page walks through the method. And for the whole launch process, read publishing an app on the App Store.
Frequently asked questions
What size is an App Store screenshot?
For iPhone, the largest accepted size is 1320 x 2868 pixels in portrait (former 6.9-inch). The size Apple marks as required is the medium Dynamic Island display: 1206 x 2622 or 1179 x 2556 pixels. For iPad, it's 2064 x 2752 or 2048 x 2732 pixels (13-inch).
What screenshot size for the iPhone 17 Pro Max?
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is in the "Dynamic Island, large display" group: 1320 x 2868, 1290 x 2796 or 1260 x 2736 pixels in portrait. The iPhone 17 and 17 Pro are in the medium display group: 1206 x 2622 or 1179 x 2556 pixels.
How many screenshots can you put on the App Store?
1 to 10 per display size, and per language if you localize your listing. The first one to three appear in search results when there's no app preview.
Do you need iPad screenshots to publish an iPhone app?
No, only if your app supports iPad. Apple then requires at least one 13-inch screenshot, at 2064 x 2752 or 2048 x 2732 pixels. With Expo, the ios.supportsTablet option decides this.
How long can an App Store app preview be?
Between 15 and 30 seconds, 500 MB max, in .mov, .m4v or .mp4, with up to three previews per size and per language. For iPhones with Face ID, the accepted resolution is 886 x 1920 pixels in portrait.
Can you put text on App Store screenshots?
Yes. Guideline 2.3.3 allows text and images added on top, as long as the screenshot shows the app in use.
