Build an App Without Coding: No-Code, AI and Limits

Building an app without coding: the honest answer

Yes, you can build an app without coding in 2026. There are two main paths: no-code tools, where you put your app together with your mouse, and AI, which writes the code for you from your descriptions. Both can get you all the way to a real app, and some no-code tools even publish to the App Store.

What the ads don't tell you is that there's almost always a point where you need to understand a bit of code, without necessarily writing any. That point hits at the worst possible place: when your app has to sell a subscription, pass Apple's review and hold up in front of real users. This guide helps you pick your path and know where that point is before you commit.

I publish my own iOS apps with React Native, Expo and AI. Solys, an alarm clock with mini-games, and TradaZen, a trading simulator, are on the App Store. Nolera and Clic were rejected by Apple, then fixed. I don't sell any no-code tool. I sell kits to build a mobile app: keep that in mind as you read this hands-on take, which is backed by each tool's official sources.

What are the ways to build an app without coding?

No-code tools that publish a real app

Some visual tools produce real mobile apps you can publish on the stores. Their free plans, though, don't publish to the stores: the details are in build an app for free. Two well-known examples:

• Bubble offers a native mobile app editor. Its documentation explains how to publish to the App Store and Google Play, and reminds you that you still need your Apple Developer account at $99 a year.
• FlutterFlow generates Flutter code. According to its pricing page, code download and store deployment start with the paid Basic plan, not the free plan.

Installable web apps

Other tools, very handy ones, don't make App Store apps. Glide, for example, says its apps are progressive web apps and that publishing directly to the App Store or Google Play isn't supported. Perfect for an internal tool; not a fit if your goal is to be found and to sell on the App Store.

AI that writes the code for you

Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor write real code, for example in React Native with Expo. That's what people call vibe coding. The difference from no-code matters: the code is yours, in a standard format, with no platform subscription needed to keep it running. The flip side is that someday you'll have to read that code. I cover this in detail in build an iOS app with AI.

What no-code does really well

No-code tools are excellent for:

• A directory or catalog: listings, search, favorites.
• An advanced form: collecting information, simple bookings, contact requests.
• A prototype to show people: checking that an idea interests someone before you sink weeks into it.
• An internal tool: an app for your team or your nonprofit, where looks don't matter much.

If your project fits one of these boxes, start with no-code. You'll learn more about your users with an imperfect app that's live than with months of thinking.

Where it gets stuck for an iOS app that needs to sell

The limits show up right where an app starts being worth money on the App Store.

Apple subscriptions. Guideline 3.1.1 of the App Review Guidelines requires Apple's in-app purchase to unlock features or content in an app. In practice: products in App Store Connect, a paywall, purchase restoration, a free trial. Before picking a tool, check how it handles all that, and whether you can plug in a service like RevenueCat. The iOS in-app subscriptions page covers this work in detail.

Apple's review. Guideline 4.2 requires an app to go beyond a repackaged website, and guideline 4.2.6 states that apps created from a commercialized template or app generation service will be rejected, unless they're submitted directly by the provider of the content. If you publish your own app from your own account, you're that provider. But an app that looks exactly like the starting template is exposed to these rules, and to guideline 4.1 if that template imitates a well-known app. Truly customize it, and read why Apple rejects an app before you submit.

Platform dependency. Your app lives inside the tool. If its prices, terms or features change, you follow along. Some tools let you get your code out, others don't: that's a question to ask on day one, not on the day your app takes off.

How the app feels. Animations, widgets, rich notifications, smoothness: what makes people want to keep an app on their home screen depends a lot on what the tool can do. Try an app built with the tool on your iPhone before you commit.

Does AI change the game?

Yes, it really does. A motivated person with no training can now produce working React Native screens in a few evenings, with an assistant like Claude or Cursor.

But there's a world of difference between "a screen that works on my machine" and "a published app that strangers use without it breaking." User accounts, syncing, network failures, small screens that cut off the UI, subscription setup, the App Store paperwork: that's where solo projects stall, and AI won't warn you about what it doesn't know. It can't see your Apple account, your RevenueCat dashboard or your phone.

The point where you need to understand a bit of code

Whether you go no-code or AI, here are the moments where "without coding" hits its limit. You don't need to write everything, but you do need to be able to read and understand:

• An error message. Knowing which file and which step breaks, so you can ask the AI or the tool's support the right question.
• A change proposed by the AI. Which files change, and whether that matches what you asked for.
• The app's configuration. The bundle identifier, the version number, the text of permission requests.
• Subscription identifiers. They must be identical across App Store Connect, RevenueCat and your code, down to the character. Only a sandbox test confirms everything lines up, a step I cover in iOS paywall mistakes.
• Data access rules. If you use Supabase, checking that each user can only read their own data.
• Secret keys. Knowing that a secret key must never be in the code of an app installed on a phone.

Building without coding, yes. Publishing and getting paid without understanding any code is where most projects get stuck.

The good news: this level of understanding can be learned on your own project, much faster than full-on programming. And AI is a great teacher if you ask it to explain instead of fix.

No-code or AI: the four-question test

1. Does your app need to sell subscriptions or in-app purchases? If so, check that the tool handles Apple purchases, or go with code written by AI.
2. Do you want to be on the App Store? If so, rule out tools that only make web apps.
3. Do you want to keep your code if you switch tools? If so, favor AI with a standard stack, or a tool that allows export.
4. Is it a test, an internal tool or a catalog? If so, no-code is probably the fastest path.

Once you've picked your path, what comes next is the same for everyone: the 4 steps are in how to build an app.

What I use for my own apps

For my apps, I chose the AI path with a standard stack: React Native and Expo for the app, EAS for builds, RevenueCat for subscriptions, Supabase for data, PostHog for analytics and Sentry for crashes. The code is mine, AI knows it well, and I can publish from any computer, as I explain in publish an iOS app without a Mac. The reasons for this choice are laid out on the React Native and Expo for a mobile app page.

It's not the only right answer. If your project is an internal tool, a no-code tool will save you time. If your goal is an iOS app that brings in subscription revenue, learning to read the code AI writes for you is, in my opinion, the best investment.

Learn what you need, no more

That's what I put into the iOS Kit: the starter code from my apps and a four-step path, with the Claude Code skills for each step, to follow at your own pace. Not sure which path is right for you? The free diagnostic starts from what you can do today and tells you which step to tackle first.

I don't promise you income or publication: Apple approves, the market decides. What the path covers is presented on the iOS developer training page.

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to build an app without coding?

Yes, in 2026. There are two paths: no-code tools, where you put your app together with your mouse, and AI, which writes the code from your descriptions. Both can get you all the way to a real app, and some no-code tools even publish to the App Store.

How do you choose between no-code and AI to build your own app?

For a test, an internal tool or a catalog, no-code is probably the fastest path. If your app needs to sell subscriptions, check that the tool handles Apple purchases, or go with code written by AI. To keep your code if you switch tools, favor AI with a standard stack, or a tool that allows export.

Can you publish an app built without coding on the App Store?

Yes, with some tools. Bubble's documentation explains how to publish to the App Store and Google Play, and reminds you that you still need your Apple Developer account at $99 a year. Other tools, like Glide, only make progressive web apps, with no direct App Store publishing. Check the tool before you commit.

Which free no-code platform should you pick to build an app?

It depends on what your app needs to do, because not all of them publish to the App Store. Bubble and FlutterFlow can, Glide only produces web apps. Their free plans don't publish to the stores: according to its pricing page, FlutterFlow starts store deployment with the paid Basic plan. The details are in build an app for free.

Can a no-code tool handle Apple subscriptions?

It depends on the tool, so check before you commit. Guideline 3.1.1 of the App Review Guidelines requires Apple's in-app purchase to unlock features or content in an app. In practice, you need products in App Store Connect, a paywall, purchase restoration and the free trial. Also check whether you can plug in a service like RevenueCat.

Do you need to understand code when you build an app without coding?

Almost always, at some point, but without necessarily writing any. You need to be able to read an error message, a change proposed by the AI, the app's configuration and the subscription identifiers. Those identifiers must be identical across App Store Connect, RevenueCat and your code, down to the character. Also know that a secret key must never be in the code of an app installed on a phone.
