How long does it take to build an app? Real timelines

How long does it take to build an app: the short answer

How long does it take to build an app? Nobody can honestly give you one number that fits everyone, because the timeline mostly depends on two things only you know: how big your first version is and how many hours you can put into it each week. That said, part of the schedule is known in advance: Apple's steps are measured in days, not months. For example, Apple says it reviews 90% of submissions in under 48 hours.

So the real lever is scope. An app that does one thing, on iOS only, with a stack you're not discovering on day one, gets built in a few weeks of steady work. A catalog of twelve features on two platforms can drag on for months and never ship. This guide breaks down where the time goes, step by step, so you can estimate your own schedule.

I publish my own iOS apps: Solys, an alarm clock with mini-games, and TradaZen, a trading simulator, are on the App Store. Nolera and Clic were rejected by Apple, then fixed. The steps below are the ones I go through with every release.

Mobile app development time: what does it depend on?

Before getting into the steps, here are the factors that change mobile app development time, from heaviest to lightest.

• The number of features in the first version. This is by far the biggest factor. Every feature adds screens, empty states, errors to handle and tests.
• Accounts and the backend. An app whose data stays on the phone is much simpler than an app with sign-up and sync across devices.
• Payments. A subscription needs setup on Apple's side, in RevenueCat and in your code, plus purchase testing.
• One or two platforms. Publishing on iOS and Android means two listings, two reviews and two rounds of testing. I cover this choice in iOS and Android app at the same time.
• Your available time. Ten hours a week and forty hours a week obviously don't give you the same schedule.
• Your starting level and how you use AI. AI massively speeds up writing code, much less everything else. More on that below.

Step by step: where the time goes when you build an iOS app

1. Scope the idea

This is the step that decides all the others. You lock down the audience, the problem, the main feature, the business model and what's out of the first version. If it takes weeks, it means the decisions aren't being made. A one-page spec is enough to wrap it up.

2. Open your Apple Developer account

Without this account, at $99 a year, you can't publish, and Apple's Enterprise program doesn't replace it. For individuals, Apple says that if you haven't received your membership confirmation within 24 hours of purchase, you should contact support. For a company, you first need a D-U-N-S number: Apple allows up to 5 business days to receive it, then up to 2 business days for the information to reach them. Start this process alongside development, not at the end. The details are in Apple developer account: price and sign-up.

3. Build the main feature

This is where the gaps are biggest, and almost all of them come from scope. A well-defined feature, with its empty states and errors, gets built fast, especially with React Native, Expo and AI. Every feature added "while we're at it" stretches this step and every step after it. The iOS app MVP page helps you cut in the right place.

4. Test on your iPhone with TestFlight

The simulator isn't enough: some crashes only show up on a real phone. Internal testing starts as soon as your build is processed. For external testers, Apple states that the first build sent to a group goes through App Review, and later ones don't necessarily need a full review. So plan for a short wait the first time. It's all explained in TestFlight: testing your iPhone app.

5. Hook up subscriptions

Create the products in App Store Connect, link them in RevenueCat, build the paywall, test purchases and restore. One scheduling point to know: Apple requires that the first in-app purchase of each type be submitted with a new version of the app. If you forget, your first submission goes out without the subscription and you start another cycle. The full workflow is on the iOS in-app subscriptions page.

6. Prepare the App Store listing

Screenshots at the right sizes, description, keywords, privacy declarations, links to your terms of use, notes for the reviewer. When everything is ready ahead of time, it takes hours. When you discover the fields on submission day, it can take several days.

7. Apple's review

The review itself is often quick, according to the Apple numbers quoted above. What costs time is rejections: each rejection means reading the reason, fixing, resubmitting and waiting for a new answer. I've covered the real timelines and what stretches them in App Store review time.

An app's schedule is won at the start, by cutting features, and lost at the end, by discovering Apple's rules.

How long does it take to build an app with AI?

AI really has changed how long step 3 takes. Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor write screens, navigation and simple logic in seconds, where a few years ago it took hours of research.

It has changed steps 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7 much less. Without access to the consoles or tests run on the actual devices, an agent can't confirm the state of your Apple account, your subscriptions or how things render. Those checks need a testing setup, even if the agent helps automate them. The result: with AI, building gets shorter, but the share of the schedule spent on setup, testing and review grows proportionally. I go into detail in building an iOS app with AI.

The three things that blow up timelines

1. Changing your mind mid-build. Every "while we're at it" reopens the scope. The fix: everything that isn't in the first version is written down in black and white as out of scope, and becomes material for the next one.
2. Discovering Apple's rules at the end. Missing demo account, screen cut off on a small iPhone, badly placed rating prompt, subscription without the required disclosures: every late discovery costs a full review cycle. The app rejected by Apple page lists the most common reasons.
3. Getting stuck alone on a configuration problem. A certificate, a subscription ID, a build that won't install: these blockers often just need the right piece of information, but they can freeze a project for days when nobody can help you.

Why "faster" isn't always better

An app can ship very fast if you skip small-screen testing, network error handling and purchase verification. It'll ship, then it'll break the first time real users touch it, and your first App Store ratings will remember.

The right goal isn't raw speed. It's the earliest release date that sacrifices neither Apple's review nor the first impression. Cut features, never robustness.

A real benchmark: the 26 days before TradaZen went live

For TradaZen, the first commit was on June 21, 2026, the first TestFlight on June 25 and the release on July 17: 26 calendar days from first commit to the App Store. That's not 26 days of full-time work, and it's not an average for all apps. The scope kept evolving after launch.

The detailed TradaZen timeline separates the build steps, the review issues and the pivots. It's an example to compare with your project, not a release date to copy.

How do you estimate your own timeline?

Instead of a number you found online, run this calculation for your project:

1. Write your one-page spec and list the screens in the first version.
2. Estimate each screen in hours, with its empty states and errors, then add the paywall and the App Store listing.
3. Divide by your real hours per week, not the ones you hope for.
4. Add a buffer for at least one back-and-forth with Apple, especially if it's your first app.
5. Start your Apple Developer enrollment right away, so it never blocks the end.

If the result feels too long, don't work faster: remove a feature.

Set yourself a deadline

A fixed deadline really helps you keep a tight scope. The iOS Kit splits the path into four steps: pick the app that can make money, build the core of the app and test it with TestFlight, hook up the money, then publish and get found. It's up to you to set a date for each one. The home page shows these four steps to build a mobile app with Claude Code.

To estimate your own timeline, the free diagnostic starts from your situation and the time you have each week, and tells you which step to tackle first.

A deadline is a working framework, not a guarantee of publication: Apple does the approving, and your pace matters. For the big picture of the journey, the build an iPhone app page is still the best place to start.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to build an iPhone app?

It mostly depends on the size of your first version and how many hours you can spend on it each week. An app that does one thing, on iOS only, with tools you're not discovering on day one, gets built in a few weeks of steady work. A catalog of twelve features on two platforms can drag on for months and never ship.

What are the steps to build an iPhone app?

Seven steps: scope the idea, open your Apple Developer account, build the main feature, test on your iPhone with TestFlight, hook up subscriptions, prepare the App Store listing, then pass Apple's review. Scoping decides all the other steps. Start your Apple Developer enrollment alongside development, not at the end.

How long does Apple take to approve an app?

Apple says it reviews at least 50% of submissions in under 24 hours, and 90% in under 48 hours. So the review itself is often quick. What costs time is rejections: you have to read the reason, fix, resubmit, then wait for a new answer. The real timelines are covered in App Store review time.

Does AI let you build an app faster?

Yes, but mostly for the build. Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor write screens, navigation and simple logic in seconds. AI changes much less about the Apple account, testing, subscriptions, the App Store listing and the review. The result: building gets shorter, but the share of the schedule spent on setup, testing and review grows proportionally.

What makes an app's timeline slip?

Three things mostly: changing your mind mid-build, discovering Apple's rules at the end and getting stuck alone on a configuration problem. Every late discovery of an Apple rule costs a full review cycle. To protect your scope, write down in black and white what isn't in the first version: it becomes material for the next one.

Is there a real example of how long it takes to publish an iOS app?

Yes: for TradaZen, one of my apps, 26 calendar days separate the first commit on June 21, 2026 from the release on July 17. That's not 26 days of full-time work or an average for all apps, and the scope kept evolving after launch. Compare this benchmark with your project, without copying it as a release date.
